This classic short story tells a tale of selfless love between a husband and wife. Like many O. Henry stories, “The Gift of the Magi” is famous for its surprise ending.
Della and Jim are short on money but not on love. On Christmas Eve, Della resorts to selling her hair—her most cherished possession—in order to buy a special gift for her beloved husband.
Making a Connection
If you could save just one item from a disaster—a fire, a flood, an earthquake—what would it be? In a few sentences, describe your most cherished possession, and explain why you treasure it. Was it a gift? If so, how does that make it especially important to you?

My cherished possession is my ice watch that Andres Rueda gave me 6 months ago, when he came back from Israel. And is very important for me because it was from him. It was a gift.

ReplyDeleteit would be all pictures
of my family, is not a gift
but is the treasure that I love
most, is very special to
me because if any of these
disasters happens and you
lose your family, the best
thing that could have would be
a picture of them, your family
My treasure was my grandparent's house in Bogota, but it used to be their home since I had a year until yesterday that the move to Medellin. As I cant's leave with a entire house, I could save my silver watch and my big Tv.
ReplyDeleteThey are my most cherished possessions because I had to wait to long to have them. In case of my Tv, I had the same small one during 8 years, and when I got the sufficient money to buy it, I did it, so it was a sacrifice also to me. And in the case of my watch, it was something I loved so much, that we can say that I got "in loved" with it. In colombia was very expensive so I bought it in Venezuela so even more it has a special meaning for me, it brings me very good memories whenever I watch the time.
I would save my iMac because it is my most valuable possession. I treasure this item because I had to fight hard to get it and it took me a long time to obtain it.
ReplyDeleteAn iMac is a desktop computer produced by Apple, inc. This computer has a specific characteristic that I like, the absence of a cpu, which is integrated on the screen. It has a big 21.5-inch LED screen that is shiny as a diamond.
If saving this item would risk my life, I would definitely save my self from the fire, flood or disaster. Because material objects can be re-obtained, instead once you loose life it’s gone forever…
The most important object I have now is my X-BOX, because I play with all my friends through it. Also I spend my free time playing Xbox, when I’m bored I use to play Xbox, also it stress me out. Something cool is that it have thousands of games, so when I´m tired of a game I play another one, another fact about Xbox is that I can play with every single people in the world, obviously if he has Xbox live or Xbox online.
ReplyDeleteAnother characteristic is that most of my friends have it, and that is something good because always I have a friend to play, is so cool that I have met people from other schools of Barranquilla. That´s what make Xbox and important object to me. Actually I don’t have a gold watch or a gold ring to valor it too much, but I will.
My most charrished possession would be a piece of jewelry that I got from my grandfather´s brother and all his family for my bat-mitzva. It is a three colored heart necklace with small diamonds. It is very important for me because that is the only family I have in Barranquilla besides my dad, my mom and my brother.
ReplyDeletei will save my computer, because was an special gift from my parents in chritsmas the year before.
ReplyDeleteIt is my first computer, well it is for my own, so it has too much information about me and the things that i like to do and more.
so the thing that i would save from a flood, fire, or earthquake, is my computer.
I would save my xbox 360 because it's not just to say that is fun to play with it. also because this can feel that some people appreciate me because it was a gift from my parents, my schoolmates, who where the ones who gave me the biggest part to get it, and my aunt because she was the one who sent me it from Del Ray.
ReplyDeleteThis also is a nice way to spend some hours with my friends killing ourselves, shouting when we get killed, or help each other to be the best.
The truth is my hair it’s really valuable for me. During two years or so I have been taking care of it and letting it grow, making it look beautiful. It may be something everyone has, but for me is really special. My parents care about my hair to, my father doesn’t like that I cut it but it’s necessary, and my mother always reminds me to hydrate it and make treatments that make it look better. It’s really important for me because is something that with time and care have reached my expectations, many people says that it’s really nice and it thrills me to know that it’s not only nice for me and my parents.
ReplyDeleteMY MOST CHERISHED POSSESSION
ReplyDeleteFiguring out what my most treasured, cherished possession is, probably, one of the most difficult questions I have ever had to answer. Ridiculous as it may sound. At plain sight it might look easy, like something you could answer in a matter of seconds. But then, you realise that, thank G'd, you have so many things, that choosing the one that is the most precious is hard, given that family, one's most likely first option, isn't exactly something material.
As for me, my grandmother has given me plenty of valuable things, even something passed down from my great-grandmother, of her own design. My father has painted beautiful paintings that bring emotion to the observer, despite being abstract. Same thing happens with a paiting my great-grandfather painted. But those things, wonderful as they are, would somehow be a burden, regardless of which one I took. There is also a sketch pad filled completely with designs of my own that shows a kind of evolution about who I am.
Nevertheless, my most cherished possession has got to be something that has internal and spiritual value. Therefore, after having ransacked my entire home in my mind, literally, in every little corner and drawer, I've concluded that my most treasured thing is a gold necklace with a tiny blue flower charm, a gold Magen David (Star of David) charm and a Hai ( (חַי('living') gold charm. I consider this a valuable possession because it was given to me by my parents when I was born. That just mentioned, gives it high emotional value. The charms and symbols that hang from it have a very significative spriritual value, reminding me of G'd upon a glimpse of them, despite I know he is all around and always with me, and in case something unfortunate like a flood happened, my necklace would help me remember that everything will be alright.
